Discussions

The international conference taking place on 2-3 October 2014, at which the results of the ZHdK Design Department case studies will be presented and discussed, marks an important stage in the research project. In collaboration with academics working in disciplines with other methodological orientations, such as science studies (Hans-Jörg Rheinberger, Michael Hagner), philosophy and epistemology (Alva Noë, Alfred Nordmann), and architectural anthropology (Albena Yaneva), the aim of the conference is to debate and discuss the question of method in the design sphere, in order to acquire new insights into the particular approaches employed within it. Through presentations, workshops, and panel discussions, various approaches to knowledge generation will be presented and brought to bear on the exploration of the design process.

The conference also features an exhibition documenting the eight studies and their results, which will be presented using various observational and analytical tools. For this purpose, the projects will be documented in an “exhibition format” based on actor-network theory. The details of these analyses will be presented and explained by their authors during a tour of the exhibition space to take place during the conference.

Both the analyses and the conference are part of a wider reflection on the prospects for the future development of the design field and the new objects and activities which are emerging from it. In addition, they will serve to position the Institute for Design Research in the academic field of methodological research, both nationally and internationally.
