So it’s not just Google and Facebook either.<\/a> This is something that’s sweeping the Web.<\/a>There are a whole host of companies that are doing this kind of personalization.<\/a> Yahoo News, the biggest news site on the Internet,<\/a> is now personalized — different people get different things.<\/a> Huffington Post, the Washington Post, the New York Times —<\/a> all flirting with personalization in various ways.<\/a> And this moves us very quickly<\/a> toward a world in which<\/a>the Internet is showing us what it thinks we want to see,<\/a> but not necessarily what we need to see.<\/a> As Eric Schmidt said,<\/a> “It will be very hard for people to watch or consume something<\/a>that has not in some sense<\/a> been tailored for them.”<\/a><\/p>\n

So I do think this is a problem.<\/a> And I think, if you take all of these filters together,<\/a> you take all these algorithms,<\/a> you get what I call a filter bubble.<\/a> And your filter bubble is your own personal,<\/a> unique universe of information<\/a> that you live in online.<\/a> And what’s in your filter bubble<\/a> depends on who you are, and it depends on what you do.<\/a> But the thing is that you don’t decide what gets in.<\/a> And more importantly,<\/a> you don’t actually see what gets edited out.<\/a><\/p>\n

That, in fact, you couldn’t have<\/a> a functioning democracy<\/a> if citizens didn’t get a good flow of information,<\/a><\/p>\n
