Microscopy is any technique for producing visible images of structures or details too small to otherwise be seen by the human eye, using a microscope or other magnification tool. A microscope is an instrument for viewing objects that are too small to be seen by the naked or unaided eye. But while microscopes (as a technology) permit one to see things more closely, they expose the weakness or incapability of the eye itself. Irony may be defined as the conflict of two meaning which has a dramatic structure peculiar to itself: initially, one meaning, the appearance, presents itself as the obvious truth, but when the context of this meaning unfolds, in depth or in time, it surprisingly discloses a conflicting meaning, the reality measured against which the first meaning now seems false or limited and, in its self-assurance, blind to its own situation. – Megan Sullivan und Francesca Lacatena, Inside the circle, collected points
–
To stop himself from picturing this nightmarish enlarge-ment of things, Orvil looked round his room in search for some reality on which to fix his mind. He concentrated on an ‚Adam‘ mirror; old, imitation, once gilt, now painted white, the white paint chipping off, some of the plaster knocked from the spidery wreaths showing the wire skeleton underneath. It too seemed horrible. – Denton Welch, Youth is pleasure
–
