From Feces To Fuel \u2013 Sanitation Service to Transform Human Feces into<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>Solid Biofuel<\/b><\/span><\/h1>\n

A global crisis: more than 2.5 billion people lack access to clean sanitation in developing countries. The consequences: inhumane conditions, health problems and high mortality rates. Simultaneously the growing\u00a0<\/span>demand for fuels leads to deforestation, high CO2 emissions and respiratory diseases.\u00a0To address those issues I developed a sanitation-cycle. It\u2019s starting point is the urine-diverting dry toilet MoSan, that I designed in 2012. However, the toilet alone is not the solution. To avoid the spread of disease, human excreta needs to be contained for transport, treatment and recycling. To ensure safe transportation of feces I developed an adequate container. After collection feces are sterilized by sunlight and processed into fuel briquettes. The service, including the container and the biofuel will lead to cleaner and healthier living conditions. For two months I worked with slum dwellers in Kenya. The success of the service has sparked interest in the development community.<\/span><\/h3>\n
