Die Technologie k\u00f6nnte zuk\u00fcnftig dazu beitragen, unsere \u00abKlimaschulden\u00bb zu begleichen.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>[&#8230;]<\/div>\n<div>Das eigentliche Potenzial der Direct-Air-Capture-Technologie liegt allerdings im Klimaschutz. Was Climeworks und andere Firmen zu Hoffnungstr\u00e4gern macht, ist die Vision, CO<sub>2<\/sub>-Emissionen zu vermeiden oder diese gar r\u00fcckg\u00e4ngig zu machen.<\/div>\n<div>[&#8230;]<\/div>\n<div>Noch mehr w\u00fcrde das Klima profitieren, wenn das aus der Luft gewonnene CO<sub>2<\/sub> in eine unterirdische Lagerst\u00e4tte gepumpt w\u00fcrde. In diesem Fall w\u00e4re die CO<sub>2<\/sub>-Bilanz sogar negativ. Solche negativen Emissionen sind sp\u00e4testens seit dem letzten Bericht des Weltklimarats ein Thema. Denn selbst bei sinkenden Emissionen ist abzusehen, dass in den n\u00e4chsten Jahrzehnten mehr CO<sub>2<\/sub> in die Atmosph\u00e4re gelangen wird, als zum Erreichen des Zwei-Grad-Ziels zul\u00e4ssig ist. Will man dieses Ziel dennoch erreichen, m\u00fcsste in der zweiten H\u00e4lfte des Jahrhunderts das zu viel emittierte CO<sub>2<\/sub> wieder aus der Atmosph\u00e4re entfernt werden \u2013 und zwar in einer Gr\u00f6ssenordnung von 10 Gigatonnen pro Jahr. Air is drawn into the plant and the CO<sup>2<\/sup> within the air is chemically bound to the filter. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once the filter is saturated with CO<sup>2<\/sup> it is heated (using mainly low-grade heat as an energy source) to around 100 \u00b0C (212 \u00b0F). The CO<sup>2<\/sup> is then released from the filter and collected as concentrated CO<sup>2<\/sup> gas to supply to customers or for negative emissions technologies.<\/p>\n<p>CO<sup>2<\/sup>-free air is released back into the atmosphere. This continuous cycle is then ready to start again. The filter is reused many times and lasts for several thousand cycles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-6 col-md-6 col-sm-12 col-xs-12 col-lg-offset-1 col-md-offset-1 noPadding removal-page-content\">\n<h2>WHAT IS CARBON DIOXIDE REMOVAL AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?<\/h2>\n<p>Climate change is driven by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, which release carbon dioxide into the air, causing global warming.<\/p>\n<p>The 2016 Paris Agreement aims to keep the increase in the global average temperature to \u201cwell below\u201d 2 \u00b0C above pre-industrial levels, in order to significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Although significant strides have been made in renewable energy and energy efficiency, these are not enough to meet the critical 2 \u00b0C target. Additional CO<sup>2<\/sup> removal from the atmosphere will be required.<\/p>\n<p>Climate change mitigation therefore urgently needs carbon removal technologies. Eighty seven per cent of all IPCC climate scenarios make it clear that negative emissions are absolutely necessary in order to keep global warming below 2 \u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly CO<sup>2<\/sup> removal is not only needed to enable negative emissions but also to achieve zero CO<sup>2<\/sup> emissions globally. Sectors such as shipping and aviation do not yet have viable alternatives to fossil fuels. Traditional mitigation measures such as renewable energies can \u2013 even in the optimum scenario \u2013 only reduce CO<sup>2<\/sup> by around 80 per cent.
