CALL FOR APPLICATIONS TO THE DOCTOR ARTIUM PROGRAMME 2020

The Dr. artium Programme at the Doctoral School for Artistic Research (KWDS) of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG) offers highly individualised doctoral studies on freely chosen topics in music and theatre, in collaboration with Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). Centering around epistemically oriented artistic practice in the fields of music and performing arts and related interdisciplinary practices, doctoral research at KWDS systematically integrates reflection through artistic experimentation with scholarly/scientific reflection. 

Highlights:

Individualised doctoral committee of 5 professors per project: 

2 internal supervisors (artistic and scholarly/scientific) from KUG or ZHdK; 2 external advisors (artistic and scholarly/scientific) from the international community; mentoring on methodological balance and on project management challenges

Dedicated subjects in Artistic Research: 

2-day block seminars in English and German on concepts, methodology, case studies, experimentation, documentation, publication, and funding acquisition in Graz; the Department of Music and the Department of Performing Arts and Film at ZHdK offer further subjects and events

Research environment and financial support: 

Lab space for artistic experiments, professional audio-recording and filming equipment, specialised library; Travel support for artistic research presentations at international conferences, May Residency Stipends, and currently 6 yearly scholarships towards research and maintenance; Dr.artium students in theatre can access facilities of the Institute for the Performing Arts and Film (IPF) at ZHdK 

Regular events and research discussion formats: 

(1) ARTikulationen, a yearly Symposium-Festival of Artistic Research; 
(2) May Residencyformat for intensive research and collaboration during May; 
(3) Salon 12Bseries of dialogues on issues of artistic research with the local community; 
(4) SONify! – yearlyfestival of artistic research organised by doctoral students

Lively research community:

Diverse community of currently 22 international doctoral students in artistic research, many of them local residents; contact to senior researchers and to international members of research activities and clusters; alumni with successful careers as artists, gaining professorships, and doing postdoctoral research. 

Activities at ZHdK as part of the Dr.artium in theatre:

Dr.artium students are part of the Junior Research Group (JRG) and attend special-themed 1-day colloquia with a focus on theatre/performing arts and an annual one-week-class on «research strategies in the performing arts» at Zurich campus.

Promotionsprogramm in Kooperation mit der Kunstuniversität Graz

Seit 2016 besteht die Möglichkeit, im Rahmen eines Kooperationsprogramms mit der Kunstuniversität Graz (KUG) in der Doktoratsschule für das künstlerisch-wissenschaftliche Doktoratsstudium ein Promotionsvorhaben im Fachbereich Theater durchzuführen. Promovierende werden dabei jeweils von einer/m künstlerischen und einem wissenschaftlichen Betreuer/in der ZHdK und/oder der KUG wie zwei externen Betreuern begleitet. Das korrespondierende Ausbildungsprogramm findet in Graz und Zürich statt. Promovierende sind zugleich Teil der Junior Research Group am DDK, wo sie zusammen mit den Teilnehmer_innen des Fellowship-Programms gemeinsame Veranstaltungen durchführen.
