During my semester abroad in Singapore, I observed an event in a bar where mostly young men played Beyblades against each other, while DJ sets next to them created a musical atmosphere. This setting tempted me to participate in the game. However, I felt transported back to my childhood, where I also did not dare to play a “boy’s game”. Where does this exclusion come from? Have I been socialized this way? Do I doubt my own abilities? Or is it simply a reproduction of a childhood memory in which I find myself trapped again and again?
How can I appropriate a game that is socially coded as “masculine”, and how can I create a nostalgic and inviting atmosphere?
