Nach Beendigung eines Studiums an der University of Southern California School of Cin\u00e9ma-Television, zog er nach New York. Hier galt er in den 1960er Jahren als f\u00fchrendes Mitglied der New American Cin\u00e9ma Bewegung der unabh\u00e4ngigen Film-Makers&#8217; Cooperative.
