During a field trip to Chișinău in May 2025, Rada Leu co-hosted a public discussion with our project partner Oberliht under the title Art, Activism, Antagonism? The event took place at Zpațiu and was one of two public discussions which will lead up to a symposium planned for July 2025. In the first of these public discussions, the focus was on the topic of culture wars and polarization. It was an invitation to critically reflect on the media narratives of Moldova being polarized between a pro-European and a pro-Russian side. What emerged during the discussion was a polarization about being polarized – one participant said that Moldova was the least polarized country, whilst another said that there simply wasn’t enough energy for a real culture war. Others highlighted different lines of polarization, such as the big divide between the rural and urban populations, and between those who earn their income locally and those who work outside of the Republic of Moldova.
