Sleeping, getting up and performing the daily morning routines, preparing tea or eating a meal, waiting for the train to commute to the office \u2013\u00a0in Ozu\u2019s films,\u00a0these routines\u00a0are not only elements\u00a0required to\u00a0provide a background for narration; they are the very substance of his films, resulting from a unique combination of objects, gestures, and a carefully chosen set of filmic\u00a0gestures.\u00a0One is tempted to see a specific filmic grammar at work,\u00a0but at the same time, Ozu\u2019s practice escapes all attempts at categorization and formalization.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In my presentation, I want to revisit some of the\u00a0domestic\u00a0places and spaces in Ozu\u2019s work and look at\u00a0their\u00a0astonishing richness \u2013\u00a0mundane, but magical,\u00a0crystal-clear\u00a0and enigmatic at the same time.\u00a0The work of film historian Helmut F\u00e4rber and his\u00a0detailed studies on Ozu\u00a0will be my guide.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ABSTRACT BY VOLKER PANTENBURG &nbsp; There are few directors who are as\u00a0celebrated\u00a0for their sensitive depictions of the quotidian as the Japanese Ozu\u00a0Yasujiro\u00a0(1903 to 1963).
