Abstract:<\/strong><\/p>\n

In polyphonic music the score very often prescribes that notes of different parts or voices should begin at the same moment in time. In actual performances perfect synchronization is never realized and normally there is a certain asynchronization. We have developed a framework of time measures for describing asynchronization in performed music. For three small instrumental ensembles (trios) synchronization was measured with specially designed recording and analysis methods. The data showed that asynchronization, defined as the standard deviation of differences in onset time of simultaneous notes, has typical values of 30 to 50 ms. Implications of these findings for perception and performance are discussed.<\/p>\n
