how to choose?

Last week after everything was wrapped up with my last project of the semester (coming soon I promise!) I went and looked at all the  diploma works from the ZHdK bachelor students. I have told myself for a long time I want to study Visual Communication (graphic design), but surprisingly, I was bored and even unimpressed by the projects they presented.

This comes as a shock. It twists and shakes my world up a bit. During this past semester in the Propädeutikum I have learned so much, but more importantly, have had SO MUCH fun experimenting with various materials. I am afraid that VisCom would be boring. That I would have to spend my day in front of the computer.

You see, I have found out a lot about myself recently: I like to play. I like to experiment. I like to get my hands dirty. I like the handcrafted side of things. I like DOING and MAKING and not just with a mouse and a screen…

Oh Dear.

I was intrigued by the projects the Style and Design students presented. I LOOOVED the Scientific Visualization presentations. And the most shocking thing of all: I an now open to the ideas of studying Game Design or Cast/Audiovisual Media.

Most of all, I don’t like how my neat, organized, boxed up future (i.e. graphic designer) has become a crazy plethora of possibilities.

I want to have the courage to explore and experiment and choose a crazy degree, but I also feel the need for a “safe” degree. I have after all, a degree in Music which I don’t use….

So I will keep ruminating and experimenting and will take some practical steps as well and research job possibilities for people who study Style and Design or Scientific Visualization.

To the Unknown.

I run bravely towards you.

I can imagine how you feel. As I got to know you I am not really shocked about your findings. When I see how much innovation there is in your work, in your kind of art, I can’t really imagine you sitting in front of a pc and pixling vectors. I understand your need for a “safe” education rather well but I think that there is none such. For sure there are educations which sound more secure because you exactly know what is supposed to come afterwards. But: Are you sure it will come? And are you sure you could do it even if you didn’t really like your studies and aren’t supposed to love the work afterwards? What about Educational art? There you could do your art works and afterwards you had the possiblity to have both: Being an artist and educate pupils in schools or probably at the university. Just one thought. Or why not try to become an illustrator? There are Courses at ZHDK or in Lucerne. SKDZ, but that’s no university.

Take your time, look what suits you, look what calls you. You are such a blessed woman with so mach creativity. You’ll do your way!

it is so nice to hear this, and you do bring up a lot of things I need to think about. I did go to the bachelor presentations in Luzern and was blown away by the illustration presentations. I will definitely be applying there, but unfortunately the chances of getting in are slim. Once again, thanks for the kind words. We need to get together next week for sketching!

Thank you for another informative blog. Where else could I get that type of info written in such an ideal way? I have a project that I am just now working on, and I have been on the look out for such info.
