Mehr als die Hälfte der Menschheit lebt in Städten, weshalb oft vom 21. Jahrhundert als dem „Jahrhundert der Städte“ gesprochen wird. Die Anziehungskraft der Städte wird meist ökonomisch begründet und umfasst in diesem Kontext nicht nur eine Vielzahl von eng beieinander lebenden Menschen, sondern auch die daraus resultierende Konzentration von Problemen, seien diese nun ökologischer, ökonomischer oder sozialer Natur. Aber es gibt einen weiteren, zentralen Aspekt: Städte produzieren Bilder und Geschichten, Symbole Mythen, Metaphern. Ihre beinahe magnetische Anziehungskraft beruht zu einem guten Teil auf diesem Überschuss an Bedeutung, der den Städten eine gesellschaftliche Vorreiterrolle, eine kulturelle Orientierungsfunktion verschafft. Hier entstehen neue Arbeits- und Lebensformen, neue Formen von Mobilität und Wohnen, neue Kulturen und Künste. Die Bilder des Schmelztiegels oder des Labors drücken trefflich aus, was wir an Potentialen sehen, die in der Stadt als Lebens- und Existenzform liegen.
Die Stadt des 21. Jahrhunderts ist auch eine Sammlung von Potentialen, ein Hoffnungsträger, der permanent neue Bilder und Metaphern erzeugt, gleichzeitig selbst auch eine Metapher für Hoffnungen und Ängste der gesamten Gesellschaft darstellt. Diesem schöpferischen Potential der Stadt zwischen künstlerischer Praxis, Lebenswelt und theoretischer Forschung und Planung ist das Jahresprojekt „Metaphern der Stadt“ gewidmet.

Today, more than half of mankind lives in cities. It is for this reason, that the 21st century is often claimed the »century of cities«. The attraction of cities is usually explained as a result of economical development. This includes not only a wide variety of people living at close quarters, but also, as a result of that, a bunch of ecological, economical or social problems. In fact, there is another very fundamental aspect: Cities create images and stories, symbols, myths and metaphors. To a large extent, their force of attraction is based on this multitude of meaning. It creates a character of vanguard and cultural orientation. In cities, new forms of work and live, of mobility and habitation, new cultures and fields of art arise. Therefore, a labatory or a crucible are the perfect metaphors for describing the capability of cities.
The city of the 21st century is a collection of capabilities, a prophet that permanently creates new images and metaphors as well as it itself is a metaphor. A metaphor for hope and fear of the whole society. The annual project »Metaphern der Stadt« is dedicated to this huge creative potential that connects artistic practice, environment and theoretical research.
