The Worm Composting System is a design approach which is focusing on the system behind the scenes and is taking account of a urban community, its lifestyle and given infrastructure:
food waste in switzerland is a problem
the food wasted per year is as much as 5x the volume of zurich’s prime tower
but due to unawareness people still throw it away
…or don’t know how to recycle properly
one of the main reason why people don’t separate food waste from plastics and other stuff within households: „it starts smelling badly after some time!“
and they get dirty hands while emptying…
this concept is trying to make household composting systems more attractive to people
and is therefor focusing on an urban approach in collaboration with local actors, the city government or social entrepreneurs to keep peoples hands clean and spare noses from bad smell, while collecting and recirculating valuable natural nutrients
A professional approach would also increase the quality of the processed waste and helps to make sure, that it is save to be used on a farmers land. It would also guarantee, that no more plastic can enter the natural ecosystem, due to a poor separation of food waste and other trash
The inclusive service is the central part of the concept and makes people believe in the system and the product behind – which has to be designed accordingly.
