The Worm Composting System is a design approach which is focusing on the system behind the scenes and is taking account of a urban community, its lifestyle and given infrastructure:

the food wasted per year is as much as 5x the volume of zurich’s prime tower

lots of it could be recycled04_food security-wormup_Seite_07

but due to unawareness people still throw it away04_food security-wormup_Seite_08

…or don’t know how to recycle properly04_food security-wormup_Seite_09

one of the main reason why people don’t separate food waste from plastics and other stuff within households: „it starts smelling badly after some time!“04_food security-wormup_Seite_10

and they get dirty hands while emptying…04_food security-wormup_Seite_14

this concept is trying to make household composting systems more attractive to people04_food security-wormup_Seite_15

and is therefor focusing on an urban approach in collaboration with local actors, the city government or social entrepreneurs to keep peoples hands clean and spare noses from bad smell, while collecting and recirculating valuable natural nutrients04_food security-wormup_Seite_16

A professional approach would also increase the quality of the processed waste and helps to make sure, that it is save to be used on a farmers land. It would also guarantee, that no more plastic can enter the natural ecosystem, due to a poor separation of food waste and other trash04_food security-wormup_Seite_17

The inclusive service is the central part of the concept and makes people believe in the system and the product behind – which has to be designed accordingly.04_food security-wormup_Seite_21 04_food security-wormup_Seite_22
