On Thursday afternoon we tried to find out more about the consumers behaviors and the reasons why so much food is getting wasted within swiss households. We elaborated a question catalogue and interviewed people at the supermarket. We tried to do that without blaming people. We rather wanted to let them speak their minds.

QUESTIONS ASKED:

. where and how much are you buying food?

. how conscious are you about the things you buy?

. how do you plan your shopping tour? (make a list, use a app, intuitive shopping?)

. what did you buy last time? do you know what is left of that?

. do you make use of farmers markets? why / why not?

. how often do you spontaneously decide to eat out?

. how much proportionally money do you spend on food?

. Do you think food in Switzerland is too expensive?

. which products are you buying food in special offers (big package for little money)

. do you cook for more than one day at once (cook now eat tomorrow)? for how many days? how do you plan?

. do you use tuperware (a portable container for food common in Europe)?

. how do you further process left overs? (heat up, transform, throw?)

. why do you think is food waste a problem?

. do you make use of online recipes?

. in which case are you going to check your mobile phone (while cooking)?

. do you have a compost available at home?

. could you imagine to have it in-door?

. how big should  a indoor compost be?

. do you grow something within your own four walls? What?

FINDINGS MADE (through the interviews but also the observation in the supermarket):

. We don’t like to plan. We rather shop spontaneously.

. The opening hours of farmers markets are held at inconvenient hours.

. The ingredients of my fridge are privat.

. To take left overs of a restaurant’s meal back home is a social tabu.

. More sensible buying is leading to higher claim.

. Moral and indoctrination are provoking a „anti-attitude“.

. To cook is something rare and special for young people (20-30). It’s more fun to to it as a group.

. Portions in restaurants are to big in general.

. We have lost the feeling for how much food we eat and need. especially if we cook for more than one person and don’t want things to run out.

. Breads are too big for a one persons household.

. Most of the food wasted are bread, milk, fresh fruits and vegetables.

. People in general are aware of the problematic regarding expiration dates. But we lost the sense of tasting an judging of weather food is still enjoyable or not. We fear healthy issues.

. Special offers seduce to buy too much of one thing.

. Special offers of fresh food are spoil too fast.

. Fridges in (especially in shared apartments) are unclearly. A lot of things get hidden at the back and therefor rotten.

. People have relatively little knowledge about proper storage of food. (dry, cold, room temperature) in general too many things are kept in the fridge.

BRAINSTORMING IDEAS TO FOUR OF THE CHOSEN CHALLENGES?

. How can we animate people to use up the left overs?

. How can we make use of the contemporary lifestyle to reduce food waste?

. How can we design a tool, that is increasing the overview of my own household storage?

. How can we recognize the real quality / value of food?
