My focus as a designer

My area of interest has been Graphic Design, but I also enjoy animation and illustration. Recently, I have developed an inclination towards Social Innovation and Interface Design, and hope to fuse the two in future projects that I may do. The idea of creating a sustainable world using design intrigues me the most. I believe that design isn’t just about making graphics that are visually aesthetic. It serves a larger purpose, which includes solving complex problems by representing them simply.

My motivation to take part in the International Design School 2013

Design is a simple thought that gets translated into any medium. The way we think is influenced by the culture we grow up in. Culture is something that is rooted in traditions, driven by communities specific to a region. The country we’re from, the family we live with, our beliefs and practices amalgamates into what we create. Thus every design has a story to tell. I’m eager to know stories that people who are taking part in IDSS have and how that reflects in their work. Meeting and conversing with people from cultures that are different from mine will broaden my perspective.

India is a country that is heavily into traditional handicrafts that have evolved over the years. Imagining what these crafts will be transformed into the future fascinates me. Many traditional handicrafts in India are dying out since the advent of industrial revolution. The challenge before us as designers and creative communicators is how will we enable this community. This summer school will help me understand how we can sustainably strike a balance between traditional systems of being and modern industrial objectives.

My favourite design

A great design is one that is simple and functional. You can’t add or subtact anything to the Paper Clip which is why I think its a very effective product.
