Inventory Archive and collection of Hermann Rorschach
Rorschach Archive at the Institute for the History of Medicine at the University of Bern. Estate of the psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach (1884-1922)
Hermann Rorschach was primarily active in the years 1909–1922 at the psychiatric hospitals in Waldau, Münsterlingen and Herisau. At the latter two institutions, he developed the well-known psychological diagnostic method called the Rorschach Test. A friend of Walter Morgenthaler’s, he was also interested in the creative work of his patients. As the son of a drawing teacher and himself a gifted draftsman, he actively encouraged the patients at Münsterlingen and Herisau to draw. The Rorschach Archive in Bern contains 121 drawings by patients from the hospitals Münsterlingen and Herisau. Some of them come from the Estate of Hermann Rorschach, another was found in the estate of psychiatrist Georg A. Roemer, who worked in 1919 as an assistant doctor at Herisau, and were also handed over to the Rorschach Archive. It includes drawings by the Herisau patients Ulrich Engler and Jakob Adolf Guggenbühl. The archive was founded in 1957 at the initiative of Walter Morgenthaler, who worked after Rorschach’s early death on the popularization of the Rorschach test.
