Assignment 3

Formulate a question and a thematic backbone you would like to follow in your work:

(it is the biggest so far, it has three sub-assignments)

A) Based on the material and ideas you and the others have posted and commented (also the tags will probably help), develop a specific question or interest you would like to follow as a guiding line for your project (within the overhead topic “reflecting locations”) and formulate it in two to three sentences.

B) You should also think about to following questions and answer them as specificly as possible: What can be the role of images from the other location in your work? What can be the role of your future partner in our plans? Should she or he be mainly a supplyer of images (of the other location) or would you like to develop a common project? Develop first ideas and strategies.

C) Finally: Can you transform your question and interests into a small, personal narrative /argumentation? This can either be a story or just a fragment, a moment. Use images and text.

Based on this third assignment (an the ones before) we, the lecturers, will try to form teams of two (Hongkong-Zürich). Deadline is Monday, 9.11.2015.

To all: you are always very welcome to comment posts.
To whom who has not posted assignment 2 yet: please do.

At the Switzerland I love nature and the evergreen meadows. It is so small and diverse, there are mountains with eternal snow and in the south are palm trees. Luckily, I have friends in the whole of Switzerland distributed so I’m everywhere.

A few weeks ago I lived for four years in the hilly Appenzell (following Pictures), now I moved back in the Thurgau (picture grain field, 5 min. from home).

For many years it was part of my daily routine to go ten to twenty kilometers. I enjoy this a lot. Wen I had time, I could do this all day long, alone or with friends. There are so many ways and typical Switzerland everything is signposted, so you can just start walking aimlessly.

Now I am studying in Zurich, this has changed a lot. I’m losing a lot of time on the train. When I was living in Appenzell I had four hours there and back to college, now from Thurgau three hours. Why I started to make free House and Petsitting, so I live now and then a few weeks in Zurich in foreign homes.

The Building of my university is the opposite of what i like. There are many corridors and they all look pretty the same, white with industrial light and minergie ventilation. many kilometers. It’s forbidden to put something at the wall or at the floor.

My colorful place

20151020_164848
This place is a part in my living district. It seems old and there are lots of reconstructions for the old buildings, but now they are painted as a new one with the colorful their faces. When I am free, I would like to go somewhere high and look down how our lively city is running. At this time, I can relax and look detailed on the flow of people and car.

For how it plays, I upload a short video on Vimeo:

Assignment 2

  • At the rooftop of a building in Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong

  • The street at night

I like to explore Hong Kong at night more than during the daytime, it gives me a very different feeling. It is more fun for me to follow the lights after sundown, and sometimes silence is the loudest sound echoing in the dark.

  • A place where I feel uncomfortable, a lively place, a relaxed place

I’m not local. The streets in Hong Kong are always full of people, sometimes I feel a bit disturbed that I can’t walk at my own pace because of the crowds, but at the same time there are so many things happening on the streets for me to observe. Hong Kong itself is indeed lively, in a complex way.

  • A thing that is relevant for me

I take a lot of photos with my film camera, in color as well as in black and white. Films are something really important to me as they are more tangible, and because of the physicality of the latent image on them that really excites me. Also I like the smell of films.

  • How I do things

Cooling down the chemical with iced vodka in the fridge. (didn’t belong to me I just borrowed for a while)

Out in the woods at the border between Inner Mongolia and Russia, shooting stars but forgot to bring tripod, and then there was beer tripod, which didn’t really help. (they rolled away with the camera)

#Walker_1

This is my second post – I called it “Walker”, and uploaded it on my Youtube profile to really show you where my “medial home” is beside my physical (Zurich).  I think, that I will direct, and cut a few more episodes and even bind you hong kong friends in it (would be lovely, cool – I think so). But more about that later… Enjoy the first episode of Walker, some thoughts of mine, favorites, and yea! My second home: Piadina’s. [..and of course: learn more’bout ZURICH ;)]

MY IMAGINARY HONG KONG

Seven and eight years ago I visited Paris and London for the first time in my life.

In Paris I saw a Chinese New Year’s Parade. To me, it was  fascinating. Their complex costumes, dragon kites and the pride they took in their tradition really touched me. While watching the parade, I felt like slipping into another world, which resembles a fairytale where people are gracious, wear bewitched costumes and unusual, but beautiful, makeup.

My first trip to London was dominated by one area called China Town. My mom and I were so fascinated by all the things we saw there. Stores with ducks hanging in front of the windows, Hello Kitty candy everywhere, which was rare to find in Switzerland, hairdressers doing only special Chinese haircuts, apples so red and shiny, how we’ve never seen them before, food so healthy and tasty, no matter how much we were eating of it, we never felt sick or tired of it and in the whole of China Town we were surrounded my Chinese lanterns.

That was my first real encounter with Chinese culture.

My Hong Kong Poem:

I imagine Hong Kong like a city where modernity and tradition meet.

Maybe like New York, a City which never sleeps.

Water is little and rice is rich

People are rushing, no one sits

Street lights follow  wherever you go

A pulsating vibe surrounds you and you feel the glow

Healthiness which brings the tradition is an invisible law

People scared wearing masks to protect it all
