assignment2 – Reflecting Locations

GRAY

While working in the color darkroom, I started to think about Zurich, my relationship with this city and what could I present to you.

There, the assignment was how to do from a color negative a black and white print.

Well, to the ones who don’t know, a color enlarger has 3 filters: Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. Each filter goes from 0 until 199.

If you turn all the filters off your print will be black. It means that you will have no color. If you turn all the filters on in the maximum, the print will be white. The colors are so dense, that it doesn’t let light goes though the filters.

So, for a GRAY, you will have to find the balance with all those three filters.

And here started my fascination about the Gray.

To find a balance.

I started to do a little research about Gray. And what I found is very similar my feelings about Zurich.

Gray is darker than white

Gray is lighter than black

Neutral, Pure

Shy and boring

Unflashy, indifference and modesty

Gray is the color of conformity.

Not having any personality of its own, it adapts to any other color. It will look either dark or light, depending upon the color next to it.

Gray is a color without a color.

Stability

Zurich is my gray. My gray zone.

Second assignment

Sorry for my delay, since my previous smartphone was not working, so I’ve just bought a new one.

This is the professional music recording and rehearsal room in Hong Kong. The photos is taken when I have a rehearsal with a famous local singer (Though I’ve never listen her songs).

This is the band room that I’ve rented in an industrial building. Local musicians usually rent a room in industrial buildings to make their own studio. This band room belongs to my band – Prune Deer.

This is the G Floor of the industrial building, which is a car park.

My band room is in Kwun Tong, which is a industrial area.

Instead of just playing music, I also work for the commercial sound mix and commercial background music. This are the two Video studio at I usually work in.

love being outdoors

Long time i have this big picture in my sleeping room and I think it will always be there where I live.

At the Switzerland I love nature and the evergreen meadows. It is so small and diverse, there are mountains with eternal snow and in the south are palm trees. Luckily, I have friends in the whole of Switzerland distributed so I’m everywhere.

A few weeks ago I lived for four years in the hilly Appenzell (following Pictures), now I moved back in the Thurgau (picture grain field, 5 min. from home).

For many years it was part of my daily routine to go ten to twenty kilometers. I enjoy this a lot. Wen I had time, I could do this all day long, alone or with friends. There are so many ways and typical Switzerland everything is signposted, so you can just start walking aimlessly.

Now I am studying in Zurich, this has changed a lot. I’m losing a lot of time on the train. When I was living in Appenzell I had four hours there and back to college, now from Thurgau three hours. Why I started to make free House and Petsitting, so I live now and then a few weeks in Zurich in foreign homes.

The Building of my university is the opposite of what i like. There are many corridors and they all look pretty the same, white with industrial light and minergie ventilation. many kilometers. It’s forbidden to put something at the wall or at the floor.

My colorful place

This place is a part in my living district. It seems old and there are lots of reconstructions for the old buildings, but now they are painted as a new one with the colorful their faces. When I am free, I would like to go somewhere high and look down how our lively city is running. At this time, I can relax and look detailed on the flow of people and car.

The street at night

I like to explore Hong Kong at night more than during the daytime, it gives me a very different feeling. It is more fun for me to follow the lights after sundown, and sometimes silence is the loudest sound echoing in the dark.

A place where I feel uncomfortable, a lively place, a relaxed place

I’m not local. The streets in Hong Kong are always full of people, sometimes I feel a bit disturbed that I can’t walk at my own pace because of the crowds, but at the same time there are so many things happening on the streets for me to observe. Hong Kong itself is indeed lively, in a complex way.

A thing that is relevant for me

I take a lot of photos with my film camera, in color as well as in black and white. Films are something really important to me as they are more tangible, and because of the physicality of the latent image on them that really excites me. Also I like the smell of films.

How I do things

Cooling down the chemical with iced vodka in the fridge. (didn’t belong to me I just borrowed for a while)

Out in the woods at the border between Inner Mongolia and Russia, shooting stars but forgot to bring tripod, and then there was beer tripod, which didn’t really help. (they rolled away with the camera)

I think, that I will direct, and cut a few more episodes and even bind you hong kong friends in it (would be lovely, cool – I think so). Show me yourself at a location of your choice. Show me your room, your house or street or your favorite place. Show me a place where you feel uncomfortable, a lively place, a relaxed place. Show me a thing that is relevant for you. Show me how you do things. And just in case you want to: Show me a person who means something for you.

Experiment with visual material, publish excerpts together with an annotating text on the blog. Comment on the posts of two or more other students. Deadline is October 21.
