Thomas Pfister studierte Journalistik und Optische Medien in Freiburg und Publizistik und Kommunikations-, Medien- und Theaterwissenschaft in Berlin. Von 1983 bis 2003 arbeitete er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter für Foto, Film und Video am Kunstmuseum Bern. Gemeinsam mit Clemens Klopfenstein gründete er die Edition Grumbach. Thomas Pfister lehrt seit 2000 an der Schule für Gestaltung in Bern. Er ist Mitglied der Association Internationale des Critiques d’Arts.
