Anna Sofie Hartmann (EN)

Anna Sofie HARTMANN (1984, Denmark) grows up in Nakskov. In between internships at Zentropa during high school, she shoots her first documentary at the age of 16. After jobs as a runner, set assistant, extras coordinator and a stay at the European Film School in Ebeltoft, Anna Sofie moves to Berlin, where she works with the artist Olafur Eliasson as a photographer and videographer. Material is used for magazines and books, as well as for the film “Studies For Your Mobile Expectations”, which is shown in conjunction with an exhibition at San Francisco’s MoMA.

In 2008 she begins her studies at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (dffb). After several shortfilms she directs the feature film “Limbo”, which has it’s world premiere at the San Sebastian IFF New Directors. “Limbo will then be screened at over 20 international festivals including Rotterdam IFF, GöteborgIFF, SXSW and CPH PIX, before being nominated for the European Film Prize Discovery Award in 2015. Peripher distributed the film in Germany.

Her second feature film Giraffe is produced by Komplizen Film in Berlin and co-produced by Profile Pictures in Copenhagen. Giraffe had its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival in August 2019 to great critical acclaim and subsequently screened among others at San Sebastian IFF, Mar del Plata IFF, Thessaloniki IFF and Viennale, where it won the FIPRESCI Award, as well as Achtung Berlin where it won the New Berlin Film Award for Best Feature. Giraffe distributed by Grandfilm was released in German cinemas in August 2020 to critical acclaim and won the award for Best Feature Film 2020 by the Association of German Film Critics in spring 2021.

Anna Sofie is a previous recipient of grants from Nordisk Film Fondet, Lolland Kommune Kunstlegat, the German National Academic Foundation, Danske Filminstruktører, Statens Kunstfond and Villa Aurora // Thomas Mann Haus Residency in Los Angeles. She lives in Berlin.
