«THE REASON I JUMP» – IMMERSIVE SOUND EXPERIENCES

A Case Study by Jerry Rothwell, Nainita Desai and Nick Ryan

Based on the bestselling book by Naoki Higashida, THE REASON I JUMP is an immersive cinematic exploration of neurodiversity through the experiences of nonspeaking autistic people from around the world. The film blends Higashida’s revelatory descriptions of his autism, written when he was just 13, with intimate portraits of the everyday lives of five young autistic people.

The film uses 360-degree sound to take an audience into a world of intense sensory experience. The score and the 360-degree location recordings are knitted together in Atmos sound design to evoke spaces, memories and associations. Director Jerry Rothwell, composer Nainita Desai and sound designer Nick Ryan will discuss their working process in a detailed exploration of the sound in three scenes from the film.
